Sydney Harbour once boasted 14 islands, but many have been annexed to the mainland. Me-Mel (Goat Island) was recently transferred to Aboriginal ownership and management and guided tours are available through National Parks. Shark Island (Boowambillee) lies in the centre of Sydney Harbour and is a popular picnic destination with ferries from Circular Quay. Clark Island also lies in the Main Harbour and is smaller than Shark Island. Rodd is a small island in the sheltered waters of Iron Cove in the Inner Harbour.
Sydney boasts some absolutely spectacular walking trails including the famous Bondi to Coogee (6km - 2.5hr), Watsons Bay to Hornby Lighthouse (2.8km – 1hr), Manly to Spit Walk (10km – 4hr), Bradleys Head (starting from Taronga Zoo) to Chowder Bay (4km – 1.5hr), Bondi to Coogee (6km - 2.5hr), Barenjoey Lighthouse (2km – 1hr) and Cremorne Point Walk (3.3km – 1.5hr).
The animals at Taronga Zoo have million-dollar views over Sydney Harbour! Open 365 days Taronga is one of Sydney’s most popular attractions with daily seal and bird shows included in the entrance price. The best way to avoid the traffic and parking hassle is to travel to the Zoo by ferry. There is a choice of public ferries or rocket express ferries with commentary.
Melbourne was once the King of theatre but Sydney takes the crown in Summer with an impressive choice of mainstream and fringe shows during the Sydney Festival. But there are many others including Quarantine Beach (North Head), Redleaf Beach (Double Bay), Queens Beach (Vaucluse), Collins Flat Beach (Manly), Clifton Gardens (Mosman Council), Castle Rock (Clontarf), West Head Beach, Balmoral and Chinamans Beach (Mosman).
Sunset in Sydney in Summer falls between 7:30pm and 8.10pm making it the perfect time of year to enjoy late night outdoor dining. Which means you can make the most of your afternoons, maybe even slipping in a mediterrean-style nap.
