A Timeline of Milestones

1970: Setting Sail for the First Time

On January 26, 1970, founders Trevor and Geraldine Haworth launched Captain Cook Cruises with a vision to share Sydney Harbour's beauty with the world. Their first cruise set the tone for decades of world-class hospitality.

"We wanted to create something that celebrated the magic of the harbour," Geraldine once said.

1980s: Expansion and Innovation

By the 1980s, Captain Cook Cruises was leading the way in harbour experiences, introducing luxury dining cruises and sightseeing tours, and adding larger vessels to meet growing demand. Embracing new adventures, the end of the decade saw the purchase of Murray Princess (1988), giving our guests a fresh perspective on Australia’s natural beauty beyond the city skyline with scenic cruises along the Murray River.

1990s: Hosting the World, Embracing Natural Wonders, and an International Leap

As Sydney captured global attention in the 1990s, Captain Cook Cruises became a top choice for international visitors, dignitaries, celebrities, and tourists alike.

During this vibrant era, we also ventured into the Great Barrier Reef (1992), offering guests the opportunity to witness the colourful underwater world and marvel at one of nature’s most spectacular wonders.

This milestone decade also marked our international expansion introducing Fiji cruises (1995), blending the exotic allure of Pacific Island paradise with our renowned hospitality.

Fun Fact: The '90s were defined by epic blockbusters like Titanic, gourmet trends featuring sun-dried tomato dishes and gourmet pizza, and the worldwide dance craze of the “Macarena.”

Over the past 25 years, the Sydney 2000 has carried millions of guests from around the world, including Pope Benedict, members of the Royal Family, Celine Dion, the Spice Girls, and many beloved Australian celebrities. Its elegant design and world-class facilities set a new benchmark for premium cruising and solidified Captain Cook Cruises as a leader in harbour tourism.

2020: Resilience During a Global Pandemic & Beyond

The global pandemic in 2020 forced us to pause our 50th birthday celebrations, yet it also ignited our innovative spirit. During this challenging time, we built The Jackson—Sydney Harbour’s largest and most luxurious vessel—to reconnect with our community as soon as it was safe. Our commitment to expanding horizons and enhancing experiences remains as strong as ever.

Reflections from the Past

"I still remember the first time I boarded a Captain Cook Cruises vessel back in the 1970s," recalls long-time guest Margaret. "It was magical then, and it’s still magical now."

Former crew member John, who worked on our vessels in the early years, shared: "Being part of the team felt like being part of a family. We all believed in the vision and worked hard to bring it to life."

Trevor Haworth, reflecting on the company’s early success, once said: "It wasn’t just about cruises; it was about creating memories and building something Australians could be proud of."
